All Trades Programs: Dual Credit programs allow students the opportunity get a head start on a career while earning both high-school credits and post-secondary credentials while in high school.

  • School District No 23 and Okanagan College are partnering together to deliver the ITA Youth Women in Trades sampler program to assist students in their career exploration while learning trades and technology skills.   Students in grades 10-12 will have the opportunity to sample various trades programs (Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, and Sheet Metal) that are currently in demand in BC.   

    The central outcome of the ITA Youth Women in Trades sampler program is to provide students with an opportunity to explore several careers in the construction trades through relevant hands-on experiences while working towards their high school graduation. Upon completion students can continue their trades training career through our Dual Credit programs options.

Kelowna Senior Secondary's Automotive Service Technician Program. This program exposes students to all aspects of service and repairs in the automotive trade. It is designed to take interested students and supply them with the practical skills to seek employment in the industry as an apprentice automotive service technician. It is highly recommended that students attend KSS for the entire grade 12 year. Although AST runs in the second semester, students will be enrolled in Trades Prep 12 and Auto 12 in semester one and will begin some aspects of the program.

 This program is open to all Central Okanagan Public Schools students in grade 12 and we are currently accepting applications for the February 2018 program start date.

 Program requirements:

  • Required courses for entrance: core graduation subjects, Automotive 11 and 12
  • Approx. cost: $500
  • Credits: 16
  • Level Completed: Certificate of Qualification Level 1

 Rutland Senior Secondarys' Forestry Program. This program allows students to gain hands on field work and theoretical skills in the forestry industry as well as qualify them for their Level One – "Utility Arborist" Certificate. This program is open to all Central Okanagan Public Schools students in grade 11 & 12 and we are currently accepting applications for the February 2018 program start date.

 Program requirements:

BCIT Electricity and Industrial Electronics Program (Construction Electrician). This program provides students with the theory and practical skills to enter the electrical trade. An electrician plans, assembles, installs, tests, repairs and maintains electrical equipment and systems in commercial, industrial and marine facilities. This program is open to all Central Okanagan Public Schools students in grade 11 & 12 and we are currently accepting applications for the February 2018 program start date.

  • Recommended courses for entrance: Physics 11, Drafting 11/12
  • Approx. cost: $1,050

BCIT Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation Program. This program provides students with the theory and practical skills needed to become proficient in the basic mechanical maintenance and repair of commercial transport trucks and heavy duty equipment. Students will become familiar with servicing and maintaining engines, drivelines, drive & hydraulic systems, air brakes, winches, blades, accessories and more.

The Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation program earns students Industry Training Authority (ITA) recognized training for Level 1 apprenticeship in the following 4 trades:

 Mount Boucherie Senior Secondary Hair Stylist Program. The program is composed of applied skills hairdressing courses which make up 990 training hours. Students must attend MBSS for the school year. Students have the option of completing English 12 while enrolled in the program. Upon completion of the program students can be entered into an apprenticeship with a salon as a hairstylist to complete a maximum of 3600 hours.

Upon completion of the in-school training and apprenticeship (work) hours, students can apply for their Red Seal certification in Hairdressing.

George Elliot Secondary School Education Assistant Certificate Program. Working in a school setting, education assistants perform a variety of duties, including helping to implement Individualized Education Plans for children with exceptionalities in the areas. Graduates of the Education Assistant Certificate program find employment in elementary, middle and secondary school in B.C. and beyond, supporting students who require extra assistance in meeting their educational goals. They also find jobs working one-on-one with children and adults who need support; in care homes for people with special needs, and with local organizations.

Admission Requirements:

• Grade 12 or equivalent

• English 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12 with a minimum grade of 60% (Communications 12 is not acceptable) or completion of the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) with a minimum score of 24/40 (Level 4),

• Applicants must complete a criminal record check no more than three months before their date of admission.

Mount Boucherie Secondary School Culinary Arts Program. This program allows students the opportunity to learn in each of the four training kitchens and covers all the basic skills required including: hygiene, safety and nutrition, hot and cold work, and bakery. The program places emphasis on practical skills and graduates are in high demand both locally and in major city centres. Students will need to combine classroom work with a worksite placement in order to be granted Professional Cook Level 1. Student must attend MBSS for one semester.

Rutland Senior Secondary Emergency Medical Responder Program. Students interested in a career in emergency medicine such as a nurse, paramedic, firefighter, respiratory therapist or doctor would benefit from this EMR course. Specifically, the EMR course is the pre-requisite to continue on into the Primary Care Paramedic program. Topics covered: EMR equipment and safety; legal and ethical issues; patient assessment and vital signs; adult/child/infant CPR with defibrillation; treatments and protocols for common medical traumatic emergencies; childbirth and pediatrics; pharmacology; intravenous maintenance; special rescue; hazardous materials awareness. Scheduled into student timetable at RSS as one class. (Justice Institute of BC Program)
